HIV/AIDS Surveillance among Tuberculosis Patients
Description
Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected patients, and prevention and treatment of TB in HIV-infected patients is considered a global priority by WHO and other international health organizations. Obtaining accurate estimates of HIV prevalence in TB patients is important as it guides the clinical management of HIV infection among patients with TB. The training course in HIV surveillance among TB patients aims to develop the necessary skills to plan, implement and evaluate HIV surveillance among TB patients through surveys and routine data collection from clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to:
- Describe the recent trends in epidemiology of HIV and TB
- Choose main strategies for HIV surveillance among TB patients in different HIV prevalence settings (generalized, concentrated and low-level HIV epidemic)
- Describe key approaches to surveillance data collection, analysis and dissemination
- Address ethical and confidentiality issues related to HIV surveillance among TB patients
- Understand advantages and disadvantages of HIV surveillance among TB patients and challenges in interpreting data
- Develop a country-specific protocol for HIV surveillance among TB patients based on routine data collection and/or sentinel surveys
Key Topics
Principles of HIV/AIDS surveillance
Global and regional perspective of HIV/AIDS and TB epidemics
Principles of HIV surveillance among TB patients
Methods and design issues in HIV surveillance among TB patients
Combined surveillance for drug-resistant TB and HIV
Data collection, study population, sampling, enrolment and consent, variables and study instruments
TB/HIV surveillance protocol development
Data analysis and interpretation
Data use and dissemination
Ethics in HIV surveillance among TB patients
Teaching Methods
The course consists of lectures, case studies and protocol development exercise. A group exercise will consist of development of a protocol for HIV surveillance system among tuberculosis patients, which will enable participants to acquire practical skills and understand methodological and social issues associated with HIV surveillance among TB patients.
Target Audience
